We are a great believer that children learn through play, with the environment playing a huge part in their learning. We focus on three main areas of learning in the Hedgehogs room which is incorporated into your babies’ daily routines and play which are:
– Communication
– Emotional security
– Physical development
The Hedgehogs staff play a huge part in building strong relationships and firm foundations for future learning. They are very passionate about their roles, offering a variety of activities and resources to suit the babies’ individual needs. Babies learn through their senses (touch, sight, smell, taste and sound). We promote their senses by using tactile and natural resources/objects from the home and outdoor environment to contribute towards the activities such as;
- Heuristic treasure baskets that include items to explore such as pine cones, bark, sticks, corn, leaves, large pebbles/shells, etc.
- Messy play like sand, water, cornflour, paint, compost, bark, rice.
- Saucepans and spoons for tapping to make sounds or
role play cooking with. - Mug tree/paper towel holders for stacking and organising curtain rings, bracelets and quoits.
- Hats, bags, shoes, scarves, etc to inspire their imagination and creativity.
Our Hedgehogs room is a cosy, bright, inviting space which provides stimulating and sensory activities to aid your baby in discovering the world around them. There is also direct access to our baby garden area where we provide sensory play,

We have a cosy sleep room (a curtained off area, within our main room) which has white noise playing and fairy lights for children to provide times for rest and relaxation during their busy day, following the child’s home routine. Being within hearing distance of staff plays an important role with safe sleeping habits.
We use a nursery management system which is an online form of communication between parents and staff about their children and routines.
Bunnies Toddler Room
The Bunnies room is designed to encourage children to explore, be creative and to use their imagination, ensuring we capture the wonderfulness of childhood.
Toddlers are encouraged to use their new found independence and adapt to boundaries they will encounter in later years. Staff teach and support children with important life skills including washing their own hands, feeding themselves using cutlery, trying to put their own coats/shoes on, potty training etc which is reinforced with praise and encouragement throughout.
Our staff team are enthusiastic and energetic, just like the children at this age! So they have tailored an environment that is rich with diverse and engaging activities including;
- The use of story sacks and song bags which encourage children’s
ever growing language development, helping them communicate between one another and adults, building confidence to establish their own identity. - Access to
role play props including clothes, shoes, phones, tills, tables, chairs, kitchen and beds as well asopen ended resources like tyres, hosepipes and crates to build on their growing imagination and creativity. - Messy play and mark making activities such as painting,
large scale chalk drawings on the playground floor, sand/water, moon sand,jellybath are free to access for the children all day so they can really explore and learn through their senses. - Physical challenges, such as balance and
co-ordination are promoted throughout all our activities, especially in our outdoor environment.
The day to day structure is based around the children’s interests whilst giving them the freedom to manage their own risk and challenges, giving all children the opportunity to reach their full potential.
